It is said that respect is not offered freely, but has to be earned.  Not so with kids, because they have not had enough life experience to understand what respect is.  They first need to gain self-respect and understand its value.  When they master a musical phrase and make fewer mistakes while practicing and rehearsing, they gain a self-respect from the results of the commitment they have made and can begin to understand the value in offering respect to others.  This fundamental of life is key in the student's path to success.
