Paz Jazz! was created to provide an opportunity for student musicians in the Pasadena Unified School District to perform for judges and attend clinics for jazz. It is an all day event that is produced, financially supported and hosted by The Oboe Foundation. This is the only opportunity of its kind in the area. Both students and music teachers are excited each year as they show their talents and improve their jazz skills.
Paz Jazz! , year three was fun, instructive and awesome!
The OBOE Foundation produced the 3rd annual Paz Jazz! held on February 28th at PCC's Westerbeck Hall. Approximately 120 PUSD jazz students participated in the day-long event. After each group performed, one or more of the judges came to the stage and worked with the students to better their performances. The results were fantastic and both the students and teachers were appreciative of the professional instruction.
Lunch was provided for all of the participants and then all attended workshops on improvisation skills and practicing methods.
Awards were given for the best high school solo performance, best horn section performance and best rhythm performance.
In attendance were many parents and supporters as well as PUSD Board members. Thanks to PUSD District Arts Arts and Enrichment Coordinator Karen Anderson for her support and the support of her department, to Pasadena City College and it's Performing Arts Department. Thanks also to the three adjudicators, Dan Cole, Zac Matthews and Brian Carmody, all jazz instructors at PCC and professional jazz musicians. A very special thank you to Karen Klages, the creator, organizer and cheerleader of the event. Without Karen, Paz Jazz! would not exist.
